June 30, 2010—The University of Utah is in the Pac-10 Conference. The University of Utah is in the Pac-10 Conference. The University of Utah … sorry, I can’t help but repeat it because it’s an amazing, awesome, unreal opportunity for the Utes. Think about it. Home conference games against USC, UCLA, Washington, Oregon, etc., etc., etc. And that’s just from a sports fan’s perspective. Maybe I should go to Utah for grad school. Hmmmm.
I remember reading rumors about Utah’s possible Pac-10 inclusion years ago. One scenario suggested Utah and BYU would go together—which seemed to fit perfectly into the Pac-10′s geographic pattern. USC, UCLA. Arizona, Arizona State. Washington, Washington State. Oregon, Oregon State … you get the picture. But somewhere along the line BYU dropped off the Pac-10′s radar. Those in the know suggest BYU may be too conservative for the existing group. Some say BYU’s staunch sabbath observance policy did them in. Probably both true.
Yes, it had to hurt to be a BYU fan, watching the giddy Utes accept an invitation to the best collegiate conference in the western United States. But as we well know—in the grand scheme of things—some things are infinitely more important than others. My gut feeling? BYU will be just fine in the years to come.
