August 10, 2010—When I was in high school my father came home from work one day, called me over, and handed me a signed action photograph of Devin Durrant—the former BYU basketball player and returned missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I don’t remember how my father got it, but it was during the week of a BYU road game played in Honolulu—back in the old Western Athletic Conference (WAC) days. I’d seen Durrant play against the Rainbows and knew he was a great player. I was stoked to receive the gift.

I unfortunately have since misplaced the photo, but it recently got me thinking, “I wonder what kind of recognition Durrant received back then?” You see, in high school I was a big sports fan, but I never kept up with all of the awards and recognition players received. I just enjoyed watching them play. So, I did some research and here’s what I found: He was an Academic All-American and WAC Player of the Year in 1983, and was named to several All-America teams in 1984, which ultimately landed him on the 1984 NCAA Division I Consensus All-America Team. Check it out. You may recognize some of the names.

I never realized one of my favorite BYU Cougars was listed among some of the greatest college basketball players of all-time. Who are your Cougar basketball favorites? Danny Ainge? Greg Kite? Jeff Chatman? Sean Bradley? Jimmer Fredette? Submit your comments below.
